Coming to Morgantown this Saturday night is a true diamond
in the rough. The band with multiple personalities is The Daly Planet,
sometimes know as The Lowcountry Boil Bluegrass Band. Get on your dancing
shoes and your Sunnyside music-loving crowd, because Saturday night will
be a bluegrass blowout dance party at the Corner Pocket Saloon.
This is a group to delight all with their unique charm
and duplicity. It’s really just two bands with the same four members, switching
off musical instruments as well as musical styles. They go from straight-up
rock (The Daly Planet) to “high-energy bluegrass” (The Lowcountry Boil
Bluegrass Band). Last time we saw these guys in Morgantown in January,
they got an unusually large crowd (for a newcomer band) shakin’ their bones.
The bands consist of: the Daly brothers, Jevon and Gavan,
with their boyish and enigmatic charms; the young prodigy Ben Vaught (is
he even old enough to be in the Corner Pocket?) and the golden boy Jeremy
Bitler. Depending on which band you are listening to, you will hear them
all on a plethora of instruments.
Jevon is a whiz on guitar, fiddle, banjo and, most impressing,
mandolin. Gavan does percussion for the rock band The Daly Planet and plays
one mean autoharp for the bluegrass outfit. Young Ben goes crazy on guitar,
and keeping up the rhythm is Jeremy on bass. All these fine young men sing
and these tight vocal harmonies add the finishing touch to the fine musicianship.
This energetic foursome have a lot of heart, and their
beaming personalities reach out through their intoxicating tunes and grab
a hold of you. Their sound is creative and diverse, but universally appealing
with their jam-heavy and sometimes improvised sound. They put on a fun
and lively show, so be prepared to dance and have a great time. And be
sure to pick up your train whistle and join in!
The Daly Planet/Lowcountry Boil Bluegrass Band is rapidly
making a name for themselves on the East Coast music scene. In April they
will be playing with Bela Fleck and on May 1 and 2 they will be playing
MerleFest, the world’s largest and most prestigious bluegrass festival.
They will also be playing the festival at Rich’s Farms this summer.
Most recently, they won a battle of the bands contest
in Statesboro, Ga. This won them prize money and most importantly a record
contract with Arizona’s KnotKnown Records. This is a college label that
will distribute their music to college radio stations around the country.
Morgantown is lucky to have such fun and good-time tunes
coming their way this weekend. Make sure not to miss this show, because
these guys are on their way to the big time.
