Break Me Off Some Bluegrass is the new release from Lowcountry Boil Bluegrass Band. It features bluegrass legend and fiddler extraordinaire Vassar Clements. Vassar has been jamming with a number of bands lately and it is
great to see him backing the next generation of bluegrass pickers.
Lowcountry Boil Bluegrass Band (LCBBB) is a 4 piece Hilton Head Island, SC based band self-described as "Bluegrass on Crack" that began in 1993 as an electric band named Daly Planet. The band began opening their shows with a bluegrass set - everyone switching instuments and soon they noticed their fans grew towards the bluegrass and away from the electric. Early in 1999, they decided to play bluegrass full time. LCBBB's discography to date has just started. Break Me Off Some Bluegrass '99 is their 1st CD release. The Weekly's, Inc. introduce Lowcountry Boil Bluegrass Band ~ one of the premier up & coming bands of the Southeast.
LCBBB typically plays Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays - occasionally Wednesdays and Sundays. Their typical set: 20 songs, 60-75 min. per set, 2-3 sets per show. The band has been known to play for 2 to 3 hours when the
crowd is pumped. About 60% of their show is bluegrass/newgrass covers including: Bill Monroe, Grateful Dead & Flying Burito Brothers. Some of their more popular covers are "Midnight Moonlight" by Peter Rowan, "Rocky Top" and "They Love Each Other" by the Dead. LCBBB's favorite encore songs are "Orange Blossom Special" or "Change My Jeans." The songs "Rocky Top" and "My Time To
Fly" get the best live response and they feel that their live verion of "My Time To Fly" sounds most like their recorded version. Look for these guys to hand out train whistles to the audience before the train song "Orange Blossom Special" and get ready to get up on stage....They've had as many as 50 at a time!
LCBBB has an unusual setup - four across the front without a drummer - not your typical club band
The band uses JBL Monitors & Speakers, Mackie PA, Crown Power Amps & Shure Mics
BAND NAME: Jevon Daly chose the name in June of 1998. The only other options considered were The Lowcountry Sound or Daly Planet Bluegrass Band. It represents a unique hot & spicy food dish served in the lowcountry of the south.
BIGGEST GIG: Hilton Head's Rick Hubbard invited the band and 9-year-old Kieran Daly to join him at MerleFest in Wilkesboro, NC in May of 1999. Over 50,000 people attended and the band gained national exposure.
Interesting Notes: Meeting Vassar Clements and having him on their album ranks up there as the top event for the band so far - Vassar is a living legend, considered by most as the world's greatest living fiddle player. Funniest thing to happen to the band during a live show? A club owner wanted to see Ben smile so she showed him her breasts! That worked! Also, Ben finished high school early and has been touring since he was 15. Jevon used to clean carpets. The band loves both the Grateful Dead & Guns N' Roses. Their van is nicknamed Smokescreen after the attractive smokescreen it sometimes makes on the highway. The band's favorite unsigned touring band is The Blue Rags, "the best they've seen yet!"

BAND LINGO: These guys don't really have any band lingo yet, but the term "Bluegrass Boil" defines a new brand of bluegrass coming out of South's Low Country that is both unique stands alone. The description "bluegrass on crack" comes closest to describing their refreshing and wild approach to bluegrass while still maintaing the reverence of tradition.
