From the Lowcountry of South Carolina comes a unique and high-energy sound that is blazing new trails in the bluegrass world. In January of 1998, members of the Daly Planet rock band started opening their shows with some acoustic bluegrass to warm up the audience. The crowd response was tremendous, and by that summer Lowcountry Boil Bluegrass Band was born.
Its been full speed ahead ever since, as the band has traveled extensively up and down the East coast and played over 275 shows in 1999. They describe their music as "bluegrass on crack" and combine the basic elements of rock n' roll with a superb stage show and a high-energy performance that is all about having fun. Since that special summer of '98, the band has experienced a growth that can only be described as phenomenal. The have opened for such national acts as Vassar Clements, Blueground Undergrass, Donna the Buffalo, Marshall Tucker Band, Col. Bruce Hampton, Gordon Stone Band, The Recipe, and the David Nelson Band. Highlights have included a prestigious first year slot on the cabin stage of the world's greatest bluegrass festival MerleFest. They also headlined at the Enchanted Forest Festival in Ohio, HarvestFest in Atlanta, and MagnoliaFest in Florida during 1999. The band has exploded on the scene with their debut CD release Break Me off Some Bluegrass featuring the legendary Vassar Clements on fiddle. This fresh and innovative CD from KnotKnown Records features Clements on six of the 12 tracks and also introduces the world to 9-year-old mandolin sensation Kieran Daly. Heavy touring and a dazzling array of innovative and off-the-wall material has made Lowcountry Boil one of the hottest acts on the East Coast today. The furious mandolin of Jevon Daly drives the sound while 18-year-old prodigy Benjamin Vaught handles lead guitar duties. Ben finished high school at 15 and has been touring ever since. His intelligence and poise shines in his advanced playing that defies his years. Bassist Jake Holzwegner provides the bouncy upright bass that keeps the crowd dancing. The versatile Rich Militec, barely 20-years-old, rips the banjo and has a voice often compared with bluegrass great Ralph Stanley. Together, their three and four part harmonies are a delight to the ear. "Their original material was fresh and something you don't hear everyday and I like things like that. To me it was great. When I play with a group I try to fit in with their style. I like to compliment them. Each group brings out something different in me, whether it's rock or swing or whatever musical style." "I think Bill Monroe would like Lowcountry Boil, and feel good about the musical direction they are headed in."
"I especially remember playing with nine-year old Kieran. I enjoyed it. He's an up and coming musician." All content © 1999 by David Regan & Trainstopping Productions.
